Phillis Wheatley was the first African American poet and first African American woman to publish a book. She published her book Poems on Various Subjects, Religious and Moral in 1773, three years before American independence. She was not only the first African-American to publish a book, but the first to achieve an international reputation as a writer. Phillis was born in West Africa, she was sold into slavery at the age of seven or eight and transported to North America. Although she was an African slave, Phillis Wheatley was one of the best-known poets in pre-19th century America.
